What is a Zombie?

Creatures resurrected from the dead are called zombies in horror movies and horror series. The undead get their name from the Creole word "Zonbi," which is still used today in Haiti. Through the American occupation of Haiti, the term "Zombie" slowly reached the USA. There, the zombie became a bogeyman for people who feared being buried alive.

Famous Films with Zombies

The first zombie film was shown in the USA as early as 1932. However, the real breakthrough of zombies in horror films only came with George Romero's "Zombie - Dawn of the Dead," which depicted the undead as flesh-eating human hunters. Horror film fans love zombies, so it's no wonder that a real zombie wave swept through cinemas worldwide. Film titles like "Zombies Under Cannibals," "Voodoo - The Horrifying Island of Zombies," and Dario Argento's "Demons" ensured that plenty of brains and entrails were eaten by zombies on the big screen in the eighties. In 1983, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video caused a worldwide stir, as the actors in zombie costumes appearing in it could only be broadcast in late-night programming.

Since the huge success of the TV series "The Walking Dead," a zombie costume as a character and disguise for Halloween and the Zombie Walk has become indispensable. Because who wouldn't want to scare their friends while dressed in a zombie costume?
